Beautifully Mundane Things/Recent Adventures

Uncategorized

People often don’t write about their lives because they feel that their daily life is “too boring” for people to want to read. On that I call bull, there’s something beautiful about the mundane parts of life, the tiny blessing that bring you joy each day, and the stories you create by merely existing. Perhaps parts of our lives are not as exciting as others, but that doesn’t make them any less valuable! I often find that those I am closest to are those who I share the most “boring” parts of my life with, the people I tell about the dog I saw on the street, the people I run errands with, or the people that I am content to just sit and exist with. And so, without further ado, here are some of the beautifully mundane things from my life lately.

My dog loves to lay in the sunshine, so recently I’ve been catching her “sunbathing” in various places, her favorite spots are the porch or right by my window when the sun comes in.

I’ve been having fun looking for things for my new apartment that I’ll be living in with a few other girls next fall; recently I’ve been loving this strawberry print. It’s super cute, but I’m not sure it’s the right look for our living room.

I got to visit my favorite indie bookstore last weekend and I found the gorgeous theology book! It’s called The Theology Handbooks by The Daily Grace Co. for anyone wondering. This bookstore has an especially good Christian and spiritual section so I always check that shelf when I visit!

Pics or it didn’t happen (not really)

A few other things I’ve been up to recently but can’t show you out of respect for other’s privacy:

-The girls summer life group I’m a part of-I have enjoyed getting to meet knew people and connect over Jesus; it’s encouraging me to get more involved in my spiritual life again and their encouragement has been super uplifting.

-My friend and I went paddle boarding on the river-it was ridiculously hot (as usual) but we got to catch up and paddle through the beautiful scenery, anddd I forgot to take pictures.

-Lighting sparklers and cooking out with my family on the Fourth of July-this is my family’s tradition and it is always a lot of fun. My sister gets super excited for the sparklers and fireworks (though there weren’t many this year because of the drought) and practically drags me to the window every time she hears one. 🙂

What mundane or “normal” things have you found joy in lately?

love, Grace

look who’s back from the dead

Uncategorized

To say it’s been a while would be an understatement. Apparently summer boredom was enough to make me think about reviving this dinosaur of a blog that I seriously doubt anyone actually remembers at this point. Oh well, we all eventually disappear into the void of time anyway. A lot has changed since I started this blog in middle school; then I was craving connection, a lonely teenager who was about as sure of herself as my dog is sure that the package man isn’t a threat. My mental health is much better than it used to be–I’m in college now, and I’m enjoying it. Learning to be confident and speak up for my self was a journey, one I’m still on, and this blog was a big part of it. Coming back home after my first year of college, things have changed and without my roommate to listen to my random midnight ramblings and (not as many) things to occupy myself, I decided to boot up ye old WordPress blog account and start typing. Turns out some of you have kept blogging this whole time and I have to say, kudos to you. That being said, I think my old blog posts had their time and place and I’m glad I stepped away from it. Now that I feel like reviving it again I think I’ll post some multimedia stuff and really just use this as a creative outlet; no post schedule, no promises, just whatever I happen to feel like doing. So join me, or don’t, It’ll be fun either way. 🙂

no promises,

the broke teenagers guide to shopping sustainably

Uncategorized

We all know that fast fashion-pretty much every store nowadays-exploits underpaid laborers and generously dumps a toxic load of waste out into the world in places where, quite frankly, waste should not be dumped. Not to mention the hundreds of people who have died due to unsafe working conditions in fast fashion producing factories in third-world countries around the globe. Now the obvious solution for the everyday person would be to just not buy from fast fashion brands, right? Well if you’re like me, then you’ll quickly realize “oh hey, I can’t afford to a buy $200 pair of Reformation pants.” What’s a girl to do then? Give up and embrace a nudist lifestyle? Just ignore fast fashion’s suspiciously cheap quality and even more suspicious labor practices? Never fear, kids, ’cause here’s your guide to dressing ethically without having to only wear overpriced white t-shirts for the rest of your life.

grace’s tip for not going broke while trying to shop sustainably #1

geT yoUrsElf to a thrift store

I know, I know, you saw that one coming, but it really is a good idea. The key here is to have an open mind, you should go in with a general idea of the style of clothes you like, but don’t limit yourself by being too picky. And don’t forget to shop in both the men’s and women’s sections. (the men’s section has the best sweatshirts 😉 )

If you don’t like shopping in person, here are a couple great online thrift store sites I have personally ordered from and been happy with what I bought:

Poshmark: https://poshmark.com/

Thread Up: https://www.thredup.com/

The key here is the opposite of thrifting in person: go with a very specific item you want in mind, thrift websites often have thousands of items for sale.

grace’s ace tips for not infinity-warring your wallet #2

Quality over quantity is the key.

When you shop, try to purchase clothes that either you know you will wear often or will last a long time. Knowing which fabrics are made to last helps when choosing items to buy. Justine LeConte, a french fashion youtuber and ethical fashion activist, has a lot of great videos on this subject.

grace’s somewhat decent tips for possibly not getting grounded for blowing all your money on expensive clothes #3

Buy your basics from the most ethical place you can.

If you can afford to shop at expensive places like Reformation and Pact, then by all means, go for it, but if you’re like most people (like me) who can’t really do that, then buying somewhat ethical fashion may be your best bet for basics like underthings, shoes, and anything else you can’t get at the thrift store. What do I mean by somewhat ethical? I mean places that charge prices for their clothes that make sense (Old Navy, Cotton On, Francescas, etc.). I say this because if you think about it, a store that’s selling their shirts for $10 (like Forever 21, Shein etc.) is probably paying their overseas factory workers next to nothing, whereas at a company that charges $20 for a t-shirt, there’s a good chance that they are paying their workers more.

In the end, fixing all the problems in the fashion industry is going to take a lot more than a few people choosing ethical fashion, but it’s at least a start in the right direction. Even if you have recently purchased things from a fast fashion brand (full disclosure, I have and regretted it), don’t be too hard on yourself. Instead, choose to go to a more sustainable store the next time you go shopping.

hope this guide helped you,

grace

5 webcomics you should read

books, Uncategorized

Hey guys! For some reason actually i know the reason and that’s ’cause i can’t go get new books from la biblioteca because of social distancing i’ve been into webcomics recently and I know that sounds like a such a “nerdy” and weird thing but there’s actually some pretty cool not-too-out-there ones out there. Anyway, without further ado, here are 5 webcomics you should read. (In no particular order)

1. Strong Female Protagonist

The blurb: “SFP follows the adventures of a young middle-class American with super-strength, invincibility and an overwhelming sense of social injustice.”

2. xkcd

A self-described “webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language.”

3. Spread Your Wings

It doesn’t have a blurb so…just go read it okay.

5. Strange Planet

honestly the weirdest on this list but…also v entertaining sooo

happy reading kids,

grace

have you read any of these before? do you have any favorite webcomics?

my life according to urban dictionary (a reaction)

Uncategorized

Hey guys! So I was just minding my own business, writing a blog post when I came up with this stupid idea: what if i put my “life” into urban dictionary, took the dumbest posts that came up and reacted to them….here are the results.

**Disclaimer: the following posts are clean and/or edited to keep things PG

***Another Disclaimer: All definitions are taken from Urban Dictionary and not necessarily my opinions. 😉

The definitions will be in regular print and my reactions will be in italics

First Query: Grace

Grace

A extremely beautiful and lovable girl who is very talented and intelligent She is very musical and has a great singing voice, but Grace sometimes lacks self confidence and doesn’t believe that she can achieve what she wants to, she can. Grace is a brilliant listener and gives great advice for friendship or boy problems! But she needs someone to listen to her and give her advice. If you have a Grace you are very lucky , use her wisely, encourage her and give her advice as she needs someone to listen to her once in a while !

” Grace is gorgeous, why can’t I be like her?”

” because your not a grace, your gorgeous in your own way!”

First off they used the wrong “you’re” in the examples and it’s really bothering me haha. I’d say this is somewhat? accurate but I’m definitely not musical at all. As for if I’m intelligent, all i can say is i hope so. ;)-

Next Query: Homeschool

Homeschool

‘The worst thing ever that will have you depressed in your teenage years, locked up in your room and crying yourself asleep. i am homeschooled and now i see no point in waking up every day.

lucille: so how is school going?
me: pretty good. exept for the fact that i havent any friends, my mom yells at me all day and so does my dad, i am bored most of the time, i hate my life, i will never have decent social skills or a boyfriend or go to parties, i cannot go to school because my dad says it is a horrible slow paced world in there, i can never escape my mom ect…
lucille: well that sounds nice… thats what you get for being homeschooled
me: i hate you sooo much right now”

I have carefully deduced two observations from this entry in this highly reputable scholarly journal:

A. This person was super salty and probably had a bunch of other issues going on in their life.

B. This is not true at all and school is what you make of it no matter where you go. I was really upset when I first started homeschool but now that I know what things/types of learning I like and dislike and have a really great group of people that I take classes with, I enjoy homeschooling a lot more and wouldn’t switch back to going to school if given the choice.

The Query: Christian

The results were so varied and interesting for this query, I decided to save this for another blog post. 🙂

The Query: American

American

“A legal citizen of the United States. Perhaps the most bashed on citizens in the world. Unfortunately, they’re often stereotyped by other countries to be obese and lazy slobs some of them are, but many are not. Plus, every country has it’s lazy obese slobs. You could call the American people overhated or negatively stereotyped by other countries.”

Not gonna lie, I started laughing a little when I saw this post. I don’t know if I’d call us the most bashed citizens in the world though, a lot of other countries get more hate in my opinion. Either way, I think whoever wrote this was right, every country does have it’s lazy slobs.

The Query: teenager

Teenager

“One who is better prepared for the zombie apocalypse but not tomorrow’s math test”

“zombie couch potato lazy teenager”

*Ahem* Truer words have never been spoken.

The Query: High School

High School

“All the worlds horrors, all the things and people you dispise and dread most, compacted into one building. “

“Hey Mark, what’s that smell?”

“It’s the smell of burning souls in dreams inside our public High school.”

mood. just mood. He/She spelled “despise” wrong though so that high school education must not be working.

The Query: Photographer

Photographer

“Term often misused to describe a “Camera Owner.”

Photographer should define to individuals using cameras who are dedicated, show some level of skill, talent, or expertise, and usually persist taking pictures for extended periods of their life.

Buy a piano you aren’t automatically a pianist.
Buy a plane and you aren’t automatically a pilot.
Buy a camera and you’re a photographer.”

“Look I got this camera at a garage sale, say cheese, I’ll be your photographer.”

“Dude, you’re just a camera owner… take the lens cap off…you’ve got a long way to go before you’re a real photographer.”

OH LOOK AN ACTUALLY ACCURATE ENTRY I don’t mind in the least people who try photography as a hobby but it always irks me a little bit when someone just picks up a camera for the first time and says that they’re a “professional photographer”. It takes a lot of work to make it as a photographer (not that i’m saying that i’ve personally “made it” or anything haha, I’m just an amateur) and so when people act like they can create a really good photo with the click of a button, it gets a little annoying, especially when you’ve put hours of work into getting a good picture.

The Query: Blogger

Blogger

“Hack writers who, although experts at nothing, feel compelled to share their opinions about everything, often rambling and oversimplifying complex subjects to satisfy an audience of fellow hacks, pseudo-scientists and snobs. Bloggers while purportedly good at writing, are actually guilty of some of the Internet’s worst grammatical atrocities and misspellings. In this sense, they are similar to reporters and journalists, who are also supposed to be proficient at basic writing skills. Many bloggers are very self-indulgent with their topics, often claiming expertise far beyond their education, in order to appear intellectual, stimulating, clever, unique or nonconformist. However, in reality, most blogs are simply online forums for poorly-reasoned opinions. Bloggers, who feel they are contributing something to the world, are actually quite useless. For this reason, they have created their own world, called the blogosphere which defies the laws of logic, common sense, and humility. As a side note, bloggers see themselves as Internet heroes and are therefore usually very proud of their writing, so they may become quite aggressive if a reader comments unfavorably on a post.

Kids, you can be anything you want to be when you grow up as long as you don’t want to become bloggers.”

Ahahaha I’m honestly more amused than insulted. First off, I don’t claim to be a scientist, psuedo or otherwise and I really hope I don’t come off as a snob. Also, I don’t write to have perfect grammar; even though I could take the time to edit everything twice and use perfect grammar, this is all just for fun, and some of the grammar “mistakes” that I use when blogging are on purpose. And to all my fellow blogger readers, blogs are not useless at all, just like creating a painting or music or a photo for fun is not useless. Of course, there are egocentric bloggers who spread misinformation, but most are just regular people who do it for a hobby or a side job, other than that, I think the person who wrote this missed the entire point of the blogosphere.

Hope you enjoyed reading this very i n t r e s t i n g post,

grace

Do you agree with these “definitions”? Should I do a part 2? Have you ever written a definition in Urban Dictionary?

moving on

Uncategorized

ive been blogging on and off for over 3 years now—wow that seems like a lot. And being on here since i was a tiny 13 year old with 0 self confidence, you see a lot of people come and go. some have been consistent, posting faithfully once a week since the day their blog was born while others just used it as an outlet for a little while, then left. and that’s okay, moving on. i guess that’s the beauty of blogging, or any creative outlet, really, it’s yours and no one else’s, there for you to express yourself as you please and for you to move on from when it feels right.

i’ve been thinking a lot about moving on recently, not from blogging, of course, but after living with an undiagnosed mental illness for most of my life, then finally receiving treatment and a diagnosis after it became so hard i didn’t know how i was going to make it, then slowly, slowly, learning to accept it and myself as i am and meds, i finally got the one thing i never thought i would, a quiet mind.

in case you think it’s all sunshine and roses on this side of the hill, turns out life doesn’t work in perfect fairytale happily ever afters. meds have side effects and life still throws you for twists and turns no matter how you feel about it. and of course there’s never really any such thing as cured when it comes to mental illness. but heck is it sure a a hell of a lot better over here in my brain and at some point comes the question of moving on. my mental illness was such a big part of my life for so long that as strange as it may seem, it can be hard to figure out who you are when your thoughts aren’t looming over you at all times. and yet in moving on to a new chapter of my life, i can’t ignore the past. i want to be more active in the mental health community, to be there for those who are going through what i went through, and to help break the stigma around mental illnesses. truth is, we’re all human, and we all have our issues, but any hardship or journey in life is better if we do it together.

who cares if they say you can’t post twice in one day,

grace

p.s. if you ever want to talk about mental health or anything, really, my email and the comments are always open. 🙂

this is a test

Hey guys! Since I basically disappeared for the last three months, and it’s been a while since my last get to know me post (3 years ago!), I thought I would do that today. I’m sure most of you know about Vouge’s “73 questions” video interviews…this is (sort of)* my own take on that.

In all seriousness though, I am very blessed, and I’m just trusting in the fact that God is with me no matter what, and yeah, while things might seem a little rough in the world right now, that doesn’t mean I’m not excited about life, it just means this point in time is a little weird. 😉 So I’ll say a 6.

so i decided to stop worrying about being judged

Uncategorized

So I decided to stop caring so much about what other people think of me and just post whatever i wanted, whatever I’m in the mood for creatively, after all, this is my blog and if someone doesn’t like it, they don’t have to read it haha. Without further ado, here’s something random I wrote:

January 9th 2020, 9:56am

Hey, Happy New Year. It’s eight days into this new decade and It feels…I don’t know it feels different but good like we here on planet earth just passed a big milestone and everythings changed. Cause we did in a way. A decade doesn’t seem like much, especially if you’ve seen a lot of them, but to me who’s only a little over one and a half of one myself, it seems pretty big. And I’m excited. But also really scared. because I want to go have adventures and do things and not be afraid because life is big and hard and scary but you can’t be afraid of it. And sometimes it feels like it’s wired deep into your veins, that fear, and you can’t for the life of you get rid of it. Some of us got a little extra fear wired into us, you know. But I’m learning, and I’m learning every day, how to break free from that fear. How to set down that weight and finally live, finally run free. Not that I wasn’t before, living, that is. I just didn’t realize then that that fear isn’t something you can let go of like dropping your keys or a plate or your phone (ugh) it’s about realizing you’re going to be afraid either way and choosing to put your feet (or whatever you’ve got) to the pavement despite it and start walking; walking toward that right thing, that dream, that whatever. And one day, one day you’ll look up and realize you’re running. You may still be afraid, but you’re running. And then you realize that laughing with no fear of the future is a real thing, even though the fear is still there. Because of course, there’s still evil and darkness and cancer and car accidents and death and loss and pain. And of course, I know that. And I’m still very afraid. But I laugh. I laugh because there is light and hope and eternity and Jesus and goodness and love. And I can either stare down that fear and deem it an insurmountable mountain, or I can choose to run through it, bravery in hand, with the knowledge that I am not alone. That I don’t have to know where I’m going to run free. And that’s what I’m going to do. Run free.

and it only took a pandemic for me to get out of my comfort zone

merry Christmas Eve + sort of a room tour

blogmas 2019, Uncategorized

Hey guys! We finished blogmas! *cheers* I know no one will probably read this until after Christmas but I just wanted to come on here and finish strong with one last post: My sister and I have a tradition of setting up the spare bed in my room and having a “Christmas sleepover”, so I thought I would share a few pics from our cute setup for sort of a room tour; sorry for the bad quality, I literally took these 5 minutes ago haha. Anyway, I hope you have a merry Christmas, and thanks for reading!

things i’m grateful for this Christmas

blogmas 2019, Uncategorized

Hey guys! It’s so important to take a step back every once and a while and think about all the things we have to be grateful for, so that’s what I’ll be writing about today. Without further ado, here are some things I’m grateful for this Christmas.

Sitting by the fire with a blanket and my family around me, the cozy blaze warming our faces.

Driving through town looking at Christmas lights, listening to Christmas music.

Christmas “parties” in the middle of class.

The way that Christmas trees glitter through people’s windows when you drive down the street.

The realization that it’s not the end of the world to feel lonely at a party.

Hope and anticipation for the new year.

That somehow giving gifts brings more joy than getting ones.

Warm tea and apple cider and hot cocoa.

Family. Good friends. Good people.

The contagious caring spirit that seems to spark in people in December.

Brightly wrapped Christmas gifts, tied up with ribbon and sitting neatly under the tree.

The feeling of completion from finishing school for the semester.

The crisp, clean smell of cold air.

Waking up in the morning to see my dog curled up nearby.

Warm blankets after a long day.

Candlelight services, the whole church dark except for the hundreds of tiny candles flickering with the music.

Dancing around the living room listening to old songs.

That life doesn’t have to be perfect for me to enjoy it.

What are you grateful for this Christmas? Thoughts? Leave ’em in the comments!

Happy Christmas Eve Eve!

a Christmas road trip

blogmas 2019, Uncategorized

Hey guys! I’ve been out of town the last couple of days, which was really fun, but it’s not so easy to write blogmas posts on the go, so I decided instead of spamming y’all with a bunch of last-minute posts, I would just let y’all know what I’ve been up to these last few days. 😉

So this weekend my family and I went on a road trip to visit my grandparents who live in a city in a state in the USA on planet Earth in the Milky Way in the universe. We got down there late Friday afternoon, and left today (Sunday) so most of these pictures are from yesterday. I’m writing this in the car on the way home right now, so ‘scuse any typos.

Saturday morning I was too lazy tm to get dressed before breakfast so I just unceremoniously went down to breakfast in my pajamas…the whole place was decorated for Christmas so me and my Christmas pjs blended right in haha.

The hotel we usually stay in serves omelettes for breakfast as well as the usual things so my mom got one for me. 🙂

After breakfast we all went to go see a movie: my dad and my brothers and I to Star Wars and everyone else to an animated movie. (my sister is too little to see anything PG-13)

If you haven’t seen the Rise of Skywalker yet, 10/10 would recommend, there were soo many plot twists in that thing, it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.* 🙂

When we got back to my grandparents house (after getting lunch at Chipotle of course ;)- ), we decided to open our “early Christmas” gifts.

My Papa wanted mexican food for dinner so we picked up what ended up being two giant bagsful of food. (I have a big family ;)-)

After we all had had our fill, we went back to our hotel and my mom and I decided to do a quick workout.

Then, after I got all cleaned up, I decided I would use one one of the super cute sheet masks that I got for “1st Christmas”

Then I just read for a bit, went to bed, and that was my day. 🙂

The next morning, (today) was a pretty slow morning, we just helped my grandparents with a few things, then set out on the road again where I’m typing this post right now. 🙂

I know this was a little different from what I usually post, but I hope you guys enjoyed!

Are you on Christmas Break yet? Have you/are you going anywhere for Christmas this year? Thoughts? Leave ‘em in the comments!
